Past Projects 2016

The SIF partnered with Red Pencil International and Jiyan Foundation to conduct a train-the-trainer programme for 20 psychotherapists working with Syrian children at Qushtapa Camp, a refugee camp in Erbil, Kurdistan. The programme equipped participants with art therapy knowledge and skills incorporated into their psychotherapeutic approaches.

This initiative aimed to promote awareness of sustainable urban living. It brought together a diverse collection of experts and artists from Singapore and Shanghai. Among them were sustainability experts from The Living! Project (Singapore), Fu Jun from the Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute Art Museum, Singaporean and Chinese artists, and various subject matter experts on urban and environmental planning.

This project was a partnership with SIF volunteer Dr Esther Joosa to conduct a train-the-trainers workshop for 25 social workers from four non-governmental organisations. The workshop aimed to teach social workers how to incorporate the arts into their care-giving practices for communities affected by HIV. The eight-day workshop began with an overview of arts-based initiatives designed for community development, followed by one-on-one mentorship sessions with Dr Joosa. Together with the 25 caregivers, she also conducted various arts activities for over 100 participants from HIV-affected communities in Tamil Nadu.

The SIF supported Singaporean producer Imis Iskandar in putting together the 2016 edition of this exhibition. The project saw about 50 Indonesian and Singaporean artists designing 54 chairs, expressing their understanding of or experiences with cancer.

The chairs were exhibited at Plaza Indonesia in Jakarta and then put up for auction at the CHAIRITY gala dinner. The auction raised some $830,000 for the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (Jakarta Division) and the Indonesian Children Oncology Foundation.

The SIF partnered Singapore arts platform The Playtent and British artist Luke Jerram to bring this global art installation to Singapore.

Working with social enterprises and welfare organisations in Singapore, 25 artists decorated 25 donated pianos, all of which were displayed at the OCBC Square @ Singapore Sports Hub during the installation’s launch on 13 March 2016. Members of the public were invited to play the pianos and learn more about the various social welfare organisations involved in the project.

Subsequently, the pianos were sent to different locations across Singapore. They were displayed in conjunction with community workshops and performances to raise awareness for the causes championed by these organisations.

This year-long collaboration was a partnership with Singapore’s GenerAsia Limited and Roslin Orphanage in Kupang, Indonesia. The project consisted of a Creative Education Programme (CEP) for the residents and Train-the-Trainer workshops for the caregivers at the Roslin Orphanage.

During the CEP, artists and educators from Indonesia and Singapore came together to introduce arts-based activities and skills, such as visual arts, theatre, movement, and playing simple musical instruments. These were incorporated into the educational programme of Roslin Orphanage, allowing residents to better express themselves and gain confidence in the process. The train-the-trainers workshops in turn enabled caregivers at the orphanage to continue these activities with future residents.
